Title: The World’s First Couple
Bible Passage: Genesis chapter 1 verse 4 – verse 25

And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Genesis chapter 2 verse 22

The Story

All men, and even animals, are born from their mother. Then where exactly did the very first man come from? The Bible records that on the sixth day of creation, “the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis chapter 2 verse 7.) That man became a living thing when God breathed into him, and he dwelt in the Garden of Eden. God called him “Adam”. God gave Adam two responsibilities; to cultivate and look after the Garden, and to give a name to all animals.

However, God saw that Adam was lonely and thought this was not good for him. God said “I will make him a help meet for him” and caused a deep sleep to fall upon him. God took one of Adam’s ribs, and closed up his flesh in its place. God took that rib and fashioned it into a woman. God brought that woman to Adam, and Adam called her “Eve”. The first people, Adam and Eve, met each other for the first time as pure beings, not knowing sin. They were a perfect couple and started out their married life in happiness.

The Lesson

Point: God created the special relationship of a married “couple”.

Science: Man is similar to other fish of the sea, birds of the sky, and animals on the earth, in that it is a “living creature”. However, God created man to be different and unique, by breathing the “breath of life” directly into him. This is indicative of God creating man in His image, to be like God. (Reference: “Practical Bible Commentary” 実用聖書注解 p.98, by Word of Life Press Ministries.) Man was created as a person of character, capable of interacting with other people of character. Man was in need of a helpmeet – one who would stand equally by him as his counterpart. None of the animals were an existence that could do that. (Reference: “Practical Bible Commentary” 実用聖書注解 p.99, by Word of Life Press Ministries.) God created woman from man, as one a lot like man, as a help meet to man, as one who would hold an intimate relation with man. (“Women in the Bible” p.19, Eunice F. Priddy.)

By Grace: The “couple” God created

The other day, my husband came up to me said “One of us said recently how we had eaten XYZ, and it was really good! Was that you or me?” This first took me by surprise, but then something touched my heart, stirring something warm inside. It was I who had eaten the food in question. But perhaps since I had shared my experience with my husband vividly, he had listened to my story as if he had eaten it, too. And after a while, he had forgotten whether it was originally he or I who had eaten it. It was an episode where I experienced one of the special aspects of the “couple” relationship.

God spent five days preparing the perfect stage for man to live in before saying “Let us make man!” God couldn’t wait to create man. I feel there is excitement in the phrase God used – “Let us.” God was looking forward to joining hearts with man and enjoying laughing together. I can imagine God looking forward to this moment thinking “Will Adam like the beautiful Garden? What names will he give the animals?”

God not only looked forward to creating a beautiful world for man, but also beautifully painting out his heart. God created the world’s first love story into Adam’s life. Adam would meet this other creature “Eve” who looks a lot like him, but is still different, and would feel something he had not felt yet. God created Adam from the dust of the ground, but Eve was different. Eve was created from a part of Adam’s body. God created a new “creature (creation)”, this “couple”, where each would think of and take care of the other as they do for themselves. They were a singular creation where, if one’s heart would hurt, the other’s would, too. If one’s heart would be filled, so would the other’s. When Adam was joined to his soulmate, the only other partner he would share his entire life with, he was given the strength needed to lead the relationship of that couple. The author of this love story was neither Adam or Eve – it was God. When a couple is joined by God, that bond is also protected by God, and it will not loosen or get cut off. I thank God for the special relationship of the married couple, and seek to enjoy this creation of His each day…!

Application: I will thank God, and take care of, the marrige relationship God has created!

… let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
